“We have a responsibility that when somebody hurts, government has got to move.” This statement came from the mouth not of a liberal but of a self-described conservative president, George W. Bush. As Bush’s comment indicates, the notion that government is there to serve the interests and needs of the people is widespread today.
But as Dr. Edward Stringham shows in this entertaining and enlightening lecture, there is another view of government—namely, that it does many things which are not in our interest. In the words of George Washington: “Like fire, [government] is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.”
